Westwood changes clubs ahead of the new season
Last year’s European number one Lee Westwood has changed to a new set of golf clubs with the hope that he will soon return him to winning ways.
Ping shipped Westwood another set of clubs after he complained to them at the end of the last tournament, and he quickly found them to his liking, shooting a 63 at a charity event in Dubai on Monday.
“Missing the cut in Abu Dhabi did not look good for me,” the world number four told reporters on the eve of the Qatar Masters. “But there were valid reasons.
“After the decision (by golf’s lawmakers) to change the regulations about the grooves (this year) I had to find a new set of clubs and the timing was not good for me because I was playing some of the best golf of my life at the end of 2009.
“Unfortunately the snow back home and a family holiday did not allow me to bed in a new set … and when I got out here in the desert I did not feel comfortable. Now I am hoping to get back into the old routine.”
Westwood, who topped the European money-list last season after victory at the Dubai World Championship in November, has a club specialist in attendance this week in case he needs him.
“I have got a back-up plan here as Ping has flown out a club technician so that if I need any further minor adjustments they can be made after each round,” he said.
