A guide to Remote Golf Trollies

Remote golf trolleys are designed to make golfer`s lives easier, by not having the hassle of dragging all of one`s clubs around the course. Remote trolleys are even better, as they mean you do not have to walk back to your caddy every time you want to change club or move on. They have become more popular in recent years, as costs have come down and real incomes have gone up, and, as a result, there are now a plethora of different products on the market. A remote caddy will come with a small remote control, usually with simple direction buttons on, to `drive` the caddy to where you want it to go. This allows you to maintain focus on your line of play - you can move directly from shot to shot, without being interrupted by constantly returning to the bag. Some remote controls will allow `incremental` turning, meaning you can direct the unit towards you smoothly in one movement, without fiddling with the controls. It can be a good idea to think about your average walking speed be fore purchasing. If you have no way of checking, an average speed on a course might be 2-4 mph, and caddies are available that can travel at variable speeds, usually up to around 6 mph. If your course has a lot of gradients, you should check the set up of the trolley you are looking at. Some have double-clutched wheels, and may have an additional motor, enabling the trolley to cope with extra strain in all directions. A drawback of remote trolleys can be battery life: check the mpAh rating between different products as a comparison of battery life, although some models are simply supplied with a spare battery, which is a more practical solution than one `big` battery. Battery type itself can be a large factor in the price of an item - e.g. Stewart Golf`s Lithium F1 currently retails at £2500. Many people are initially put off remote caddies due to the price. However, prices now start at around £250 (e.g. Supacaddie Freelander SUP602R), and even these will often have a signif icant warranty period - an important thing to check on a product with so many moving parts.

It is a good idea to check the dimensions of a trolley before buying, to make sure you can fit it in your car along with the rest of your golf set. You should also be sure to check the reputability of the supplier of the trolley, as there has been some controversy in recent years regarding interference from caddy remote controls from units not properly licensed in the EU. A reputable supplier will be able to show that their products meet the R&TTE test and Ofcom regulations. Not only is this an important thing to check from a legal point of view, but also, a product meeting Ofcom requirements is less likely to be a poorly manufactured unit in general.
